Songs of Faith (2023-Present)
Songs of Faith is an ongoing series of semi-autobiographical assemblages, borrowing and utilising the contexts and memories associated with each carefully chosen component. Bryant is fascinated by sentimentality and imposed meaning; treasuring mundane objects from their family ‘archive’, and imposing their own rich meaning onto these things that are otherwise discarded- like a losing raffle ticket that was tucked into the back of their Nan’s phone. Notions of faith and truth are questioned as we are invited to believe in the transubstantiation of these objects, removed and translated from their origins as though they are talismans, reliquaries, part of a living archive.
The Ballad (2023-Present)
Developed over the duration of a two year residency on the Associate Studio Program, The Ballad is an ongoing writing project which underpins Bryant’s practice. The Ballad is the engine of the work, and acts as a space for contemplation, reflection and excavation of feeling and meaning. Working intuitively on cheap lining paper or directly on the walls, Bryant is occupied by a pursuit of Truth. Working as quickly and automatically as possible, the artist encounters themselves and the work again and again, creating an ecosystem which means each work is informed by everything that came before it and will inform everything that comes after it. Each scroll of paper or scribble onto a wall contributes a verse to The Ballad, which will continue as a lifelong project.
